Engineering Survey and Structural Stability
Review pre-demolition survey requirements, collapse indicators, load paths, temporary support, floor and wall stability, openings, controlled access, competent-person oversight, and stop-work triggers.
Course Code: DS1
The 1-Hour Demolition Safety course provides construction and trade workers with critical knowledge to work safely during demolition operations. Demolition work involves unique hazards such as structural instability, falling debris, exposure to hazardous materials, and the use of heavy equipment in confined areas. This training focuses on hazard recognition, safe work practices, and regulatory compliance to protect workers and the public.
Participants will learn how to assess structures prior to demolition, identify and control potential hazards, and follow safe procedures for partial and total building demolition. The course also covers personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, debris removal safety, and compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart T – Demolition, as well as NYC Department of Buildings Site Safety Training (SST) requirements.
This course counts as 1 Hour of Specialized Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Build awareness of the planning and controls required before structural components are disturbed. Demolition risk changes continuously as loads, supports, utilities, materials, access routes, equipment, and surrounding public exposures change throughout the sequence.
Review pre-demolition survey requirements, collapse indicators, load paths, temporary support, floor and wall stability, openings, controlled access, competent-person oversight, and stop-work triggers.
Address service location and control, coordination, asbestos and lead assessments, silica and dust, chemicals, tanks, fire hazards, respiratory protection, hygiene, regulated work, and required specialist involvement.
Understand approved demolition sequences, equipment and suspended-load zones, wall and floor removal, debris chutes, falling-object protection, communication, public safeguards, and changing site conditions.
Review safe access, fall and opening protection, housekeeping, debris loading and removal, PPE, exclusion zones, emergency response, incident reporting, and verification before work resumes.
This course does not authorize engineering decisions, demolition supervision, equipment operation, hazardous-material disturbance, or changes to an approved sequence. Follow project documents, permits, employer procedures, competent-person direction, and applicable regulatory requirements.
