Load and Route Assessment
Evaluate weight, size, shape, stability, grip, center of gravity, contents, visibility, route, destination, footing, clearance, stairs, weather, hazards, and available help.
Course Code: HL1
The 1-Hour Handling Heavy Materials and Proper Lifting Techniques course is designed to help construction and trade workers prevent injuries caused by improper lifting and material handling practices. Musculoskeletal disorders and back injuries are among the most common workplace incidents, and this training provides practical strategies to reduce strain and work more safely.
Participants will learn safe lifting techniques, how to assess loads before moving them, and how to use mechanical aids to reduce physical effort. The course also covers ergonomic principles, proper posture, and team lifting coordination to ensure workplace safety. This training aligns with OSHA guidelines and NYC Department of Buildings requirements for Site Safety Training (SST).
This course counts as 1 Hour of General Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Build awareness for planning material movement, assessing loads and routes, selecting mechanical assistance, coordinating team lifts, controlling posture and movement, storing materials safely, and reporting unsuitable conditions.
Evaluate weight, size, shape, stability, grip, center of gravity, contents, visibility, route, destination, footing, clearance, stairs, weather, hazards, and available help.
Select suitable handling equipment when appropriate and authorized; plan team size and positions, designate a leader, agree on commands, move together, and stop if control is lost.
Review stable footing, secure grip, controlled smooth movement, avoiding twisting, moving the feet, keeping loads manageable, plus handles, wheels, slopes, surfaces, pinch points, and braking.
Use stable storage and racks, respect capacities, secure materials, maintain access, control rolling and falling hazards, stop unsuitable work, report conditions, and revise the plan.
Use task-specific planning, mechanical equipment, redesign, or additional help when appropriate. Follow employer procedures and do not continue a lift that exceeds your ability, training, authorization, or safe conditions.
