Suspect Materials and Hazard Recognition
Review where asbestos-containing materials and lead coatings may be encountered while understanding that appearance alone cannot confirm their composition.
Course Code: AL1
The 1-Hour Asbestos/Lead Awareness course is designed to educate construction and trade workers about the hazards of asbestos and lead exposure in the workplace. Asbestos and lead-based materials can be found in many older buildings, and improper handling can result in serious health risks. This course provides an overview of identification, risks, and safe work practices to minimize exposure.
Participants will learn how to recognize potential asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and lead-based paint hazards, understand the health effects of exposure, and follow proper safety procedures when these materials are suspected or identified. The training emphasizes compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 (Asbestos), OSHA 29 CFR 1926.62 (Lead), and NYC Department of Buildings Site Safety Training (SST) requirements.
This course counts as 1 Hour of Specialized Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Build awareness of two serious construction hazards commonly associated with older buildings. Learn to recognize situations that may involve suspect materials, avoid disturbing them, understand exposure routes and health risks, and follow site reporting and protective procedures.
Review where asbestos-containing materials and lead coatings may be encountered while understanding that appearance alone cannot confirm their composition.
Understand inhalation, ingestion, contaminated dust, long-latency asbestos disease, lead toxicity, and why exposure prevention and early reporting matter.
Avoid unauthorized disturbance, stop work when appropriate, control access, notify supervision, and follow required assessment, engineering-control, hygiene, PPE, respiratory and decontamination procedures.
Review labels, signs, regulated-area concepts, employer programs, OSHA construction standards, site-specific instructions, documentation, and escalation responsibilities.
This course does not authorize asbestos or lead sampling, inspection, risk assessment, abatement, regulated disturbance, or clearance work. Those activities may require licenses, certifications, exposure assessment, specialized training, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, and controlled work practices.
