Develop practical awareness of hazards created by tool condition, selection, guarding, energy sources, accessories, the work environment, and operator behavior. Safe tool use requires the correct equipment, a pre-use inspection, required controls, trained operation, and prompt removal of defective tools.
Match the tool and rated accessory to the task; examine handles, guards, switches, cords, plugs, batteries, hoses, blades and attachments; and report or remove damaged equipment from service.
Keep required guards in place, use PPE selected through the hazard assessment, secure the work when appropriate, control access, maintain stable footing, and reduce flying-particle, dust, noise and entanglement risks.
Recognize damaged cords, grounding and GFCI considerations, compressed-air and hose hazards, battery risks, unexpected startup, and the need to isolate energy before servicing or adjustments when required.
Follow manufacturer instructions and employer procedures, avoid unauthorized modifications, keep the work area orderly, transport and store tools securely, and limit repairs to authorized qualified personnel.
This awareness course does not authorize every participant to operate every tool. Actual work must follow the employer hazard assessment, manufacturer instructions, applicable regulations, competent supervision, and any tool-specific qualification or authorization requirements.
