Risk Factors and Early Warning Signs
Recognize force, awkward and static posture, repetition, duration, vibration, contact stress, heavy handling, inadequate recovery, and symptoms that should be reported under workplace procedures.
Course Code: ER1
The 1-Hour Ergonomics course provides construction and trade workers with practical strategies to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and other workplace injuries caused by poor ergonomics. This training focuses on safe work practices, proper body mechanics, and adjustments to the work environment to improve comfort and efficiency.
Participants will learn how to identify ergonomic risk factors, apply correct lifting and posture techniques, and use tools and equipment that minimize strain. The course also covers the importance of task rotation, stretching, and early reporting of discomfort. This training aligns with OSHA’s ergonomic safety recommendations and NYC Department of Buildings Site Safety Training (SST) requirements.
This course counts as 1 Hour of Specialized Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Build awareness of how job demands, tools, loads, posture, reach, repetition, vibration, contact stress, recovery time, and work organization can contribute to musculoskeletal strain. Effective prevention starts with improving the work rather than relying only on worker technique.
Recognize force, awkward and static posture, repetition, duration, vibration, contact stress, heavy handling, inadequate recovery, and symptoms that should be reported under workplace procedures.
Assess load weight, shape, grip, stability, path, destination and frequency; improve storage height and access; and use carts, hoists, lift tables, team handling, or other assistance when appropriate.
Improve reach and working height, select appropriate tools and handles, maintain equipment, reduce vibration and trigger force, support neutral positioning, and redesign workflow where feasible.
Understand the limits of stretching and rotation, plan suitable recovery, vary exposures meaningfully, communicate problems early, document task concerns, and reassess controls when conditions change.
This course does not diagnose or treat musculoskeletal conditions and does not replace a task-specific ergonomic assessment. Persistent or concerning symptoms should be reported and evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.
