Select and Observe the Task
Prioritize high-consequence, frequently exposed, new, changed, nonroutine, incident-related, or worker-identified work and observe how it is really performed with affected employees involved.
Course Code: JHA1
The 1-Hour Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) course provides construction and trade workers with the knowledge and skills to systematically identify, evaluate, and control jobsite hazards before work begins. By breaking down tasks into steps and analyzing each for potential risks, workers can prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage.
Participants will learn the principles of hazard recognition, risk assessment, and control measures. The training includes OSHA’s guidelines for conducting an effective JHA and how to integrate findings into safe work procedures. This course also addresses the importance of communication and worker involvement in the JHA process to promote a proactive safety culture.
This course counts as 1 Hour of Specialized Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Learn a repeatable process for examining work before exposure begins. A useful JHA reflects actual field conditions, worker knowledge, equipment, materials, sequence, interfaces, abnormal events, and effective controls—not a copied checklist detached from the task.
Prioritize high-consequence, frequently exposed, new, changed, nonroutine, incident-related, or worker-identified work and observe how it is really performed with affected employees involved.
Document setup, access, material staging, operating sequence, interfaces, shutdown, cleanup, and foreseeable abnormal conditions with enough detail to expose hazards.
Examine energy, environment, equipment, materials, people and simultaneous operations, then apply elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, work-practice, and PPE controls in that order where feasible.
Assign responsibilities, review the JHA with affected workers, verify that controls are available and effective, stop when conditions differ, and update the document after changes, incidents, near misses, or new information.
Use the JHA to coordinate work, not to bypass permits, engineering, competent-person duties, exposure assessments, lift plans, lockout procedures, confined-space programs, emergency plans, or other legally required documents and qualifications.
