Space Recognition and Entry Classification
Review confined-space characteristics, permit-required criteria, signs and access control, employer evaluation, pre-entry planning, prohibited conditions, and the limits of awareness training.
Course Code: CS1
The 1-Hour Confined Space Entry course provides construction and trade workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in and around confined spaces. Confined spaces pose unique hazards such as limited entry/exit points, poor ventilation, toxic atmospheres, and the potential for engulfment. This training emphasizes hazard recognition, safe work procedures, and regulatory compliance.
Participants will learn how to identify confined spaces, understand permit-required confined space entry procedures, and use proper atmospheric testing equipment. The course also covers personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, emergency response planning, and compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA – Confined Spaces in Construction, as well as NYC Department of Buildings Site Safety Training (SST) requirements.
This course counts as 1 Hour of Specialized Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by the New York City Buildings Department.

Build awareness of spaces with restricted entry or exit and hazards that may rapidly become fatal. Safe entry depends on employer evaluation, a compliant program, trained roles, controlled energy and material hazards, verified atmospheric conditions, communication, and effective rescue arrangements.
Review confined-space characteristics, permit-required criteria, signs and access control, employer evaluation, pre-entry planning, prohibited conditions, and the limits of awareness training.
Understand oxygen, flammability and toxic hazards; testing sequence and monitoring; calibrated instruments; ventilation limitations; and why trained personnel must evaluate actual conditions.
Review energy and material isolation, permits, authorized entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, continuous communication, accountability, PPE, retrieval equipment, and work-practice controls.
Recognize evacuation triggers, prohibit impulsive rescue, plan capable and timely rescue services, use non-entry retrieval when feasible, coordinate emergency response, and document incidents or changing conditions.
This one-hour course does not replace site-specific permit-space training, employer authorization, demonstrated role competency, atmospheric-testing qualification, medical evaluation, respiratory-protection requirements, or rescue-service planning.
